Winnie MAK Chui Ying
Winnie MAK was born in Hong Kong. She studied Chinese ink painting and calligraphy in Calgary while living in Canada in the 1980s. She attended workshops organised by the late LEE Byng, the foremost watercolourist from Hong Kong, and the late Chin Shek LAM, a leading contemporary ink painter.
She designed and conducted in 1990s a series of experimental art classes for children from 3 to 15 years of age. Her students were frequent entrants in both local and regional art competitions with outstanding results. She was a visual arts instructor with the Hong Kong Ballet education and outreach programmes in the years 2004 and 2007.
She also set up ceramic workshops in Foshan, China, in 2000, and has since been involved in various public art initiations and installations in Hong Kong and the Asia region. With the recent establishment of her studio in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong, she now engages in the creation of ink painting and management of visual art projects on a full-time basis.
She has been very active, in the past two decades, in co-curating and co-organising the annual Asian International Art Exhibitions of the Federation of Asian Artists. She is a key member of its Hong Kong Committee of the Federation of Asian Artists.
Artist’s Statement
“I adore Nature and it is my source of inspiration. I enjoy using Chinese ink and brush to illustrate its meticulous elegance with the most simplistic approach.”
